Channel Headboard Tutorial
In this tutorial, we will show you how to create a profession looking channel headboard for your home. We will give you tips to achieve a beautiful headboard
Materials Needed
- Plywood wood
- Wood
- Saw
- Foam ( how much projection would you prefer )
- Foam adhesive
- Batting
Tools Needed
- Staple gun
- Staples
- Saw
- Foam cutter
Steps
1.Measure the width of your bed frame and decide on the height of your headboard. Then build a border on the back of the the plywood so the headboard has a thicker look.
2. Cut a piece of plywood that is the same width as your bed frame and the desired height of your headboard. *TIP* You can have this cut at the place you purchase the plywood
3. Measure and draw out where the channels will be and decide how wide you would like your channels to be. *TIP* Add a centre line going across from one side to the other. This will help ensure your fabric stays lined up to the board.
4. Cut foam padding to be the size of the channels. Width should be the exact size and the length should have 1” over hang on both ends to wrap around the wood edge. The first and last foam should be given 1” extra to allow it to be stapled to the back of the plywood.
5. Cut fabric panels the size of the channels giving about 3/4” more for width and length should have enough excess fabric to wrap around the edges of the plywood. Then sew all panels together. The first and the last panel should have more excess fabric for width to allow fabric to be stapled to the back of the plywood. *TIP* put one foam panel on the plywood and measure from the wood around the foam to the other side of the foam to know what the measurement for the fabric panel should be for your project since different fabrics and foam density will need to be taken into account.
Now let's sum up what you should have at this point:
- You should have the board with all the measurements drawn out with where the channels will be.
- You should have your foam and batting cut in the desired pieces.
- Your fabric panels should be sewn together with the widest panels as the first and last pieces.
- You are now ready to start applying one channel at a time.
6. First channel you start by gluing the foam down according to the measurements. Then you take the precut batting and lay that over the foam. Then take the fabric and start stapling them down to the plywood, pulling it taut as you go. Repeat for all sections.
7. Lastly you should staple the excess top and bottom over to the back of the plywood. Pulling the fabric taut as you go. Trim the excess fabric once you have stapled all the fabric.
9. You can finish by adding lining at the back to cover the staples and adding felt tack at the bottom of the completed headboard.
